Collection: Earl Grey Tea

Earl Grey tea is essentially black tea blended and flavoured with oil of bergamot. This fragrant oil is added to black tea to give Earl Grey its unique taste. While Earl Grey teas have been traditionally blended from black tea such as the Chinesse Kenum, which were not intended to be drunk with milk, other blended have become widely available. Earl Grey made from stronger teas such as Ceylons, which are better suited to be taken with milk.

The oil of Bergamot is the essential component in Earl Grey teas. So, Earl grey teas are subject to the properties of oil of bergamot. As it is a type of tea flavouring, almost any tea can be adapted to have the earl grey flavour such as rooibos and green tea. Early Grey is an acquired taste for many people but it has some benefits, though anecdotally but widely known.

Oil of bergamot is known for its mood stabilising properties as it is rich in antioxidants, which help to calm the body. Antioxidants also help to fight fever, infection and aid the treatment and management of other chronic health conditions.

History of Earl GreyEarl Grey is believed to have been named after Earl Charles Grey, who was a British Prime Minster (1830-34). He was known to have received a gift of tea flavoured with bergamot oil and Earl Grey has since become of the nation’s favourite teas!
